The latest on complementary and alternative medicines

Even though many parents of kids with autism and  autistic adults are using cannabis (THC and CBD) and cannabidiols (CBD only), these treatments are technically illegal.  So how are pediatricians discussing these options with their patients when asked?  A few pediatricians from states where it is legal for adults to obtain cannabis containing products weigh in on what they say, how they communicate, and what is ethical to explain in what circumstance.  Also, new findings from an imperfect, but medically supervised, study on stem cell therapies in autism.  Findings are interesting but should be judged with caution.  Links to the articles are below:

  1. Hi Alycia,
I have really enjoyed your podcast. As a physician, I enjoy being able to stay up to date on the newest research to help my son. I have been doing a lot of reading about stem cells. During the last podcast you urged people not to go abroad, and to reach out to Duke or to you. I have been trying to get my 4.5 year old son in to Duke for months now. He has autologous cord blood, and we have forwarded the report to Duke. We also have cord blood for 3 siblings (which Duke is using as part of their expanded access protocol.) However, it has been impossible to hear anything back from Duke. They sent a generic email out lately that there are many people interested and they were doing their best.
Is there a better way to get ahold of them? As a physician, I have reached out to people that I know who have some connections in neuroscience there, but I still haven’t had any luck. Do you have any insight into how long it is going to take to get into Duke? I fear that my son will age out of their trials before we ever hear from them, which is what has led me to begin researching options abroad.

    Thank you
